RG96: Still Images



RG96-001. Photographic Prints.
This collection consists of photographs on the following: subject files (1890-1995), images acquired by the Information Department from various press sources and independent photographers; includes substantive coverage on committees, conventions, affiliated unions, legislation, testimony, strikes, and work; portrait files (n.d.), includes individual and group images primarily of twentieth-century personalities; studio originals (1905-n.d.), includes images by noted photographers Lewis Hine and Margaret Bourke-White; Samuel Gompers (1887-1982), includes images from Gompers' personal life, his career as a founder and first president of the AFL, and various ceremonies and memorials in his honor after his death in 1924; William Green (1900-1962), includes images documenting Green's career from 1900 to his death in 1952; John L. Lewis (1919-1971), includes images documenting Lewis' years as head of the United Mine Workers of America, the Committee on Industrial Organizations, and the CIO; Philip Murray (1922-1954), includes images of Murray from his years of involvement with the United Mine Workers of America, as head of the United Steel Workers of America, the Committee on Industrial Organizations, and the CIO; Walter Reuther ([1910]-1975), includes images of Reuther during his career as head of the United Auto Workers, as president of the CIO, and as president of the AFL-CIO Industrial Union Department; and George Meany ([1906]-1980), includes images from Meany's youth through his death in 1980, documenting myriad aspects of his career in labor.

RG96-002. Photographic Negatives.
This collection consists of negatives acquired from photographers Frank Alexander (Merkle Press) and Steve Yarmola (AFL-CIO), which document federation and affiliated union activities (e.g., conventions, apprenticeship programs, ceremonies, etc.). Alexander negatives include over 10,000 jobs and span the years 1948-1983; Yarmola negatives include around 5,000 jobs and span the years 1972-1992.

RG96-003. Photographic Slides.
This collection currently consists of one series comprised of 254 Keystone Viewing Company slides, primarily documenting international labor activity.

RG96-004. Morris B. Schnapper Collection.
This collection contains approximately 5,000 visual images of American labor from 1700 to the mid-1970s, collected by Morris Schnapper for his book, American Labor: A Pictorial Social History, published by his Public Affairs Press in 1972. Also included are textual materials used for the book, as well as materials related to the book's production, promotion, and reception.
